1. How to use this checklist
Don't register for everything on this list. The goal is to identify what you're actually missing from your new home and build a registry around those genuine gaps โ not to create a comprehensive wish list of home goods.
Each item is marked with a priority level:
- Essential โ you'll need this within the first week
- Useful โ you'll use it regularly, worth having
- Nice to have โ genuinely good, but not urgent
Aim for 20โ40 items total across a mix of price points. Include at least 6โ8 items under $40 so guests at every budget have options.
2. Kitchen essentials
The kitchen is where most new-home gaps live. Check what you actually have before registering here โ moving often means discovering the full inventory of your kitchen for the first time.

8. What to skip
A few categories that tend to underperform on housewarming registries:
- Decorative items with strong aesthetic choices โ art prints, cushions, vases, picture frames. Unless you specify exactly what you want, guests won't be able to get it right. Skip the guesswork on both sides.
- Scented candles โ you will receive several regardless. There's no need to add them to the registry.
- Novelty kitchen items โ the avocado slicer, the banana stand, the egg separator shaped like a face. These feel fun in the shop and live in a drawer.
- Items you already own and just want a nicer version of โ if you have a frying pan that works, don't register for a more expensive one unless you're actively replacing it.
- Anything requiring very specific measurements (blinds, curtains, rugs) โ unless you know the exact size, don't add it. You'll end up with something that doesn't fit.
The best housewarming registry is honest about what you actually need, not a curated version of your dream home. Guests can tell the difference, and they'll be more enthusiastic about contributing to real gaps than aspirational upgrades.
