Getting started

Is Gift Registry free?

Yes, completely free — for registry owners and for guests. There are no fees, no premium tiers, no retailer commissions, and no hidden charges. We do display Google ads on some pages to keep the lights on, but the core service is and always will be free.

What occasions does Gift Registry support?

Any occasion where people give gifts. The platform has built-in templates and occasion labels for:

  • Wedding registry
  • Baby shower registry
  • Birthday wishlist
  • Christmas wishlist
  • Graduation registry
  • Housewarming registry
  • Anniversary registry
  • Any other occasion (use the "Other" option)

You can also create a registry with no occasion label at all — a personal wishlist that is always active.

See our occasion-specific guides: Wedding · Baby Shower · Birthday · Christmas · Graduation
Do I need to download an app?

No app download is required. Gift Registry works in any browser on any device — phone, tablet, or desktop. That said, you can install it as a Progressive Web App (PWA) from Chrome or Safari's "Add to Home Screen" option if you would like an app-like experience.

How is Gift Registry different from a retailer registry (like Amazon or Target)?

Retailer registries lock you into shopping at one store — you can only add items from Amazon.com, or only from Target.com. Gift Registry is universal: add items from any store, mix and match freely, and guests buy directly from whichever retailer you have linked.

There are no completion discounts (which incentivise overspending), no retailer incentives, and no pressure to shop anywhere in particular. You get the gifts you actually want at the prices they are actually sold for.

Can I have more than one registry at the same time?

Yes. Your account can hold as many registries as you like. Many users maintain a general wishlist year-round alongside a specific event registry (like a separate wedding or baby shower list). Each registry has its own unique share link.

Creating a registry

How do I create a registry?

Create a free account at register, then click "Create new registry" from your dashboard. Give it a name (usually your own name), choose an occasion if applicable, set an event date if you have one, and optionally add a cover photo. That is it — your registry is live and ready to have gifts added.

Can two people co-own a registry?

Yes. This is designed for couples creating a wedding or housewarming registry together. Once you have created your registry, go to the settings panel and invite your partner by their username. They will receive an email notification and your registry will appear in their account. Co-owners have full access to add, edit, and manage gifts.

Note: only the primary owner (whoever created the registry) can delete it or remove co-owners.

Can I use curated template gifts to get started?

Yes. When you choose an occasion (Wedding, Baby Shower, Birthday, Christmas, Graduation, Housewarming, or Anniversary), you can browse a curated list of template gifts and add them to your registry with one click. Templates include photos, descriptions, and price estimates — they are a great starting point if you are building your first registry and are not sure where to begin.

Can I add a cover photo to my registry?

Yes. Add a cover photo URL when creating or editing your registry. The photo appears at the top of your registry page and becomes the preview image when you share the link on WhatsApp, iMessage, Facebook, or social media — so the link shows a nice image rather than a blank preview.

Can I set an event date?

Yes. Setting an event date enables automatic reminder emails for you, for guests who have claimed gifts, and for any private invitees — at 30 days and 7 days before the event. After the event date passes, claim buttons are disabled for guests (the registry owner retains full access).

Can I delete a registry?

Yes. The primary registry owner can delete a registry from the registry settings panel. Deleting is permanent — all gifts and claim data are removed. Co-owners cannot delete a registry they did not create.

Adding gifts

Can I add gifts from any store?

Yes. Paste any product URL from any online store and click "Import" — the gift name, description, price, and photo fill in automatically. Works with Amazon, Etsy, IKEA, Target, Williams-Sonoma, Net-a-Porter, Bookshop.org, independent retailers, and thousands more.

For sites that block auto-import (a minority of retailers), you can fill in the details manually and add an image by right-clicking any product photo and choosing "Copy image address".

Can I add gifts manually without a URL?

Yes. You can add any gift by filling in the name, description, and price manually — no URL required. This is useful for experiences (a cooking class, a restaurant voucher), cash contributions, or items from physical stores that do not have an online presence.

How do I import from an Amazon wishlist?

If you already have an Amazon wishlist, you can bulk-import it. From your registry page, find the "Amazon Wishlist Import" panel. Paste your public Amazon wishlist URL and click "Scan Wishlist". The system extracts up to 20 items and shows a checklist — select the ones you want to add to your Gift Registry list.

Your Amazon wishlist must be set to Public for the import to work. See the How It Works guide for step-by-step instructions.

Can I set a priority or mark top picks?

Yes. When adding or editing a gift, set its priority to "High" to mark it as a top pick. High-priority gifts display a "Top pick" badge on the registry and guests can filter the list to see only your top picks — useful on longer lists where you want to highlight what you really want most.

Can I organise gifts into categories?

Yes. Add a category label when creating or editing any gift (for example "Kitchen", "Bedroom", "Experiences", "Tech"). When at least one gift has a category, filter pills appear above the list so guests can browse by category. Category filters work alongside the budget filter — both can be active simultaneously.

Can I reorder gifts on my registry?

Yes. In the registry owner view, each gift card has a drag handle (the ⠿ icon on the left). Drag it to reorder your list. The new order is saved automatically and guests see gifts in the same order you set.

Is there a limit to how many gifts I can add?

No hard limit. In practice, most registries work best with 20–60 gifts covering a range of prices. Very long lists can feel overwhelming for guests — if your list is long, use categories and the priority flag to help guests navigate it.

Sharing & privacy

How do I share my registry with guests?

Click "Share Link" on your registry page to copy your unique URL. Share it however is most natural — in a WhatsApp group, by email, on your wedding website, in an invitation insert, or on social media. You can also:

  • Use "Share by email" to send it directly to individual email addresses from within the platform
  • Generate a QR code (click the QR code button) and download it to print on invitations or place cards
  • Share to Twitter/X or Bluesky via the "Social" dropdown (public registries only)
  • Share via WhatsApp or iMessage directly from the Social dropdown
Can I make my registry private?

Yes. Set your registry to Private in the settings panel. Private registries are not publicly listed anywhere — only people with the direct link can view them. You can switch between private and public at any time. Private registries also support direct email invitations to specific people.

Can the registry owner see who claimed which gift?

No — and this is a core feature. The registry owner can see which gifts have been claimed (shown as "Claimed" on the gift card) but never who claimed them. The claimer's name and email are stored privately and never shown to the registry owner. This keeps every gift a surprise until the event.

The only notification an owner receives when a gift is claimed is a generic "Someone just claimed a gift!" toast notification — no details about which gift or who claimed it.

Can guests see who else has claimed a gift?

No. Guests can see whether a gift is available or already claimed — they cannot see who claimed it. The claiming system is fully anonymous in both directions.

Can I invite specific people to a private registry?

Yes. For private registries, you can invite specific email addresses from the registry settings. Invitees receive an email with the link and their address is tracked so they receive event reminder emails (if you have set an event date).

Can followers be notified when I add new gifts?

Yes. Logged-in users can follow a registry by clicking the heart button on the registry page. When the registry owner adds a new gift, all followers receive an email notification. This is useful for public registries where you add items over time and want interested guests to check back.

Guest experience

Do guests need an account to view or claim gifts?

No. Guests click the share link, browse the registry, and claim a gift by entering their name (and optionally an email address). No account required, no app to install. The process works on any phone or computer in any browser and takes about a minute.

Can two people accidentally buy the same gift?

No. The moment a guest claims a gift, it is instantly marked as taken for all other visitors. The claiming system uses real-time updates — if two people are looking at the same registry at the same time and one claims a gift, the other sees it disappear immediately.

What happens after a guest claims a gift?

After claiming, the guest buys the gift directly from whatever store you have linked. Gift Registry does not process any purchases — it is a coordination layer only. The guest buys the item independently at whatever price they can find.

The registry updates to show the gift as claimed, and the registry owner receives a generic notification that a gift has been taken.

Can a guest unclaim a gift if they change their mind?

Yes. Guests who remember the name and email address they used when claiming can unclaim a gift by clicking the claimed gift and choosing "unclaim". If a guest cannot remember their claim details, the registry owner can unclaim a gift from the owner view.

Can guests filter gifts by price or category?

Yes. Budget filter pills appear on every registry — guests can select "Under $25", "$25–50", "$50–100", or "Over $100" to see only gifts in their price range. If the registry owner has added category labels to gifts, category filter pills appear too. Both filters can be active simultaneously.

What does a guest see if the registry event date has passed?

Guests see an "event has passed" banner and claim buttons are disabled. The gift list remains visible so guests can see what was on the registry. The registry owner retains full access to manage the list.

Can a guest follow a registry to receive updates?

Yes, if they have a Gift Registry account. Logged-in users can follow a registry by clicking the heart button. When the owner adds new gifts, followers receive an email notification. This is optional — most guests just view the registry and claim without creating an account.

Group gifts

What is a group gift?

A group gift is a single registry item that multiple guests can each contribute toward. Instead of one person buying a $300 item, three friends might each contribute $100. The registry shows the item as a group gift and tracks contributions as people claim their share.

How do I set up a group gift?

When adding or editing a gift, enable the "Group gift" toggle. Set the total price of the item. Guests who visit the registry can each claim a contribution — they enter their name and the amount they want to contribute, and the registry tracks the total funded so far.

What kinds of things work well as group gifts?

Group gifts work best for larger-ticket items that one person might not want to buy alone:

  • A pram or baby travel system
  • A high-end kitchen appliance (stand mixer, coffee machine)
  • A piece of furniture
  • A honeymoon contribution fund
  • A quality tech item (camera, laptop)
  • An experience like a weekend trip or cooking class

After the event

How do I track which gifts I have received?

The After the Event view (accessible from your registry page once gifts are claimed) shows all claimed gifts with their status: claimed or received. Click "Mark received" on any gift once it has arrived. This helps you track what has and has not been delivered, especially useful for weddings where gifts arrive over several weeks.

Can I send thank-you messages through Gift Registry?

Yes. From the After the Event view, click "Send thank you" on any claimed gift. If the guest left an email address when claiming, a pre-filled thank-you message is sent to them directly. You can customise the message before sending.

What happens to unclaimed gifts after the event?

Unclaimed gifts remain on your registry until you remove them. There is no automatic removal after the event date. You can keep the registry active as long as useful — or delete it when you are done. Claimed gifts that are not marked as received or purchased within 90 days are automatically unclaimed by the system to prevent gifts from being locked forever by abandoned claims.

Can I print my registry as a gift list?

Yes. As a registry owner, click the "Print / PDF" button on your registry page. This opens the print dialogue with a clean layout — interactive elements are hidden, gift URLs are printed out in full, and each gift card avoids being split across page breaks. Save as PDF from your print dialogue if you want a digital copy.

Account & security

How do I create an account?

Go to register and fill in your username, email address, and password. You can optionally add a display name and profile photo. The whole process takes about one minute.

Can I log in with a passkey instead of a password?

Yes. Gift Registry supports WebAuthn passkeys. After logging in with your password, go to Account Settings and register a passkey using your device's biometrics (Face ID, Touch ID, Windows Hello, or a hardware security key). On future logins, you can authenticate with the passkey instead of typing your password.

What if I forget my password?

Click "Forgot password?" on the login page. Enter your email address and you will receive a password reset link. The link is valid for one hour. If you do not receive the email, check your spam folder.

Can I add a shipping address to my account?

Yes. In Account Settings, the Shipping Address section lets you save a full postal address. This is helpful for sharing with guests who prefer to buy physical items and post them directly — you can copy your address or refer guests to it without having to type it out each time.

How do I opt out of the weekly email digest?

Every weekly digest email includes an unsubscribe link at the bottom. Clicking it immediately opts you out — no account login required. You can also turn off digest emails in Account Settings under Notifications.

Can I delete my account?

Yes. In Account Settings, the Danger Zone section contains an account deletion option. Deleting your account permanently removes all your data including registries, gifts, and claim records. This action cannot be undone.

Technical questions

Why did the URL import not work for a particular product?

Some retailers block automated scraping of their product pages. In these cases, fill in the gift details manually: paste the product URL as the gift link, enter the name and price yourself, and add an image by right-clicking any product photo on the retailer's page and choosing "Copy image address" (or "Copy image URL"), then paste it into the image URL field.

For Amazon, the bookmarklet (see Account Settings) is an alternative — it adds gifts directly from the Amazon product page while you are browsing.

What is the bookmarklet and how does it work?

The bookmarklet is a small piece of JavaScript you drag to your browser's bookmarks bar. When you are browsing a product page on any website, clicking the bookmark opens a small overlay that pre-fills the gift details from that page and lets you add it to your registry in one click — without navigating away from the shop. Set it up in Account Settings under the Bookmarklet section.

Does Gift Registry work on mobile?

Yes, fully. The site is responsive and works on all screen sizes. It also functions as a Progressive Web App (PWA) — on iOS, tap the Share button and choose "Add to Home Screen"; on Android in Chrome, tap the install prompt or use the browser menu. This gives you an app icon and full-screen experience without a separate app download.

Are real-time updates shown when gifts are claimed?

Yes. The registry page uses server-sent events (SSE) to push real-time updates. If you have the registry open and someone claims a gift, a notification appears immediately and the gift is marked as taken without needing to refresh the page. This also means if two people are viewing the registry at the same time, they both see the same live state.

How are gift images handled?

Gift images are proxied through our server to avoid mixed-content issues and broken images from external sites. The proxy validates image URLs, checks they are actually image files, and caches them for 24 hours. Images are limited to 2MB. If an image fails to load, a generic gift placeholder is shown instead.

Does Gift Registry work if I am not connected to the internet?

The site has a service worker that caches static assets (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) for offline viewing. However, live registry data — gifts, claim status, and all dynamic content — requires an internet connection to load. Offline mode is limited to viewing previously cached page shells.
